Probably more than you want to get into but it may be worth your while to replace the sheet rock above the insert with a water resistant backer board like durock or hardie backer. Check if you need to adjust this mark to avoid laying slivers of tile at the top and bottom. Slide it into place and check to be sure it is level. Have perpetually peeling paint in section of drywall above insert in kid s bath.
