As an after thought take one of your tiles to the store and get the sales associate to cut it for you using their saw if the chipping problem is dimished always expect some then ask to see what blade is mounted on that saw.
Push slowly letting the saw do the work and keeping your fingers away from the blade.
Only a wet saw will give you the smoother cut than a manual tile cutter especially if you aren t familiar with either tool.

Although it seems more likely the tile has been abused in some way to cause chips there are tests that can be performed on the tile to determine how chip resistant it is.
To notch the tile follow these steps.
Notching one end set the saw blade or platform at a depth that will cut through the full thickness of the tile.
Because of the hardness of porcelain always prevent chips but working slowly and using a new blade helps.
How to cut glaze tile without chipping.
Push the piece between the blade and fence until it completely clears the blade.
If your tile is not porcelain then i m thinking a 215 or 315 blade will produce less surface chipping than the 225 hot dog.
Fill the reservoir under the platform of a diamond blade wet saw with water.
Place the tile on the platform with one end of the mark where you will make the cut facing the blade but don t touch.
Push the tile into the blade along the shallow.
Set your blade so that this time it will cut through the whole remaining thickness of the tile.
Now you are going to make the notch.
